A modern resume is quite different than what the standard was in the past. In a tough economic climate and a very competitive job market, your resume can be your greatest tool. It used to be that you only stuck with the facts and presented them bullet by bullet throughout your resume. Now it’s much more focused on the accomplishments you achieved and what makes you stand out from the crowd. In a survival of the fittest environment, your resume has to be your greatest asset.

Breaking the Rules and the Mold at the Same Time

What makes a modern resume stand out is the format and the way in which it is presented. Realistically speaking, the old versions of resumes contained a whole series of job descriptions. Bullet by bullet people would present their work history by telling anybody who cared to listen what exactly they did in each job. This could prove to be quite monotonous after awhile.

Adding to the problem however was the fact that the “rule” was that no resume should go over one page in length—what a dilemma! So now you had to present each and every job description but keep it as short and sweet as possible. You can see why this version of a resume didn’t prove to be successful after awhile.

Stay Ahead of Telling Them About Yourself

The big difference now is that the modern resume is about presenting your accomplishments. This is your opportunity to speak to the leads you generated, the number of deals you signed, or the revenue that you created as a result of your hard work. This is more of an opportunity to brag a bit, so long as it’s within reason. You want to provide a living summary of the work that you’ve done, the accomplishments that you’ve had and overall what contributions you can provide to an organization.

If you truly want to stand out from the crowd, you need to put your best foot forward through the tool that your resume should be. While it can be helpful to tell a potential employer what you did in each of your roles, it can be even more helpful to provide a summary of sorts to convey what that all meant. Sure, you can still list out some important bullets but a modern resume will expand upon those to tell a potential employer why those are pertinent. Always remember to answer the question of “so what?”.
So while you want to be careful not to come off as cocky, you do want to be confident. You want your modern resume to stand out from the crowd and help to convey why an employer should hire you above others. If you focus on what makes you special and are sincere in your approach, your modern resume will most certainly be the key to your success.
