The old stuffing envelopes scam is not the danger anymore. It’s the “funds transfer” scheme (a version of the Nigerian 419 scam)that requires you to deposit a check in your own bank account, then withdraw the money, keep a specified amount for yourself and send the rest on to an out-of-country contact using Western Union (because it can’t be traced). It can take weeks for your bank to determine that the initial check was a fraud, and then you’re on the line for the entire amount, plus you could be charged with taking part in criminal activity. Don’t rely on looking up the company name online…scammers sometimes use legitimate company names to give their schemes a touch of reality. Watch out for ads claiming to pay $300 to $600 PER HOUR for customer service work! Another big scam going on right now, using real company names (who are not actually hiring!) The first rule is always: DON’T SEND THEM MONEY! And be very careful where you send your resume, your personal information can be used to defraud you.
